8 DAYS TOUR FROM OUARZAZATE TO MERZOUGA SAHARA DESERT

 DAY 1: ARRIVAL – OUARZAZATE

Upon arrival at Ouarzazate Airport, you will be greeted by your professional driver and transferred to your hotel or riad. This initial day is intentionally relaxed, allowing time for rest and orientation before the journey begins in earnest.

Depending on your arrival time, you may explore Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Sahara.” The town is renowned for its cinematic heritage and its refined examples of southern earthen architecture, including the historic Taourirt Kasbah.

DAY 2: OUARZAZATE – SKOURA – VALLEY OF ROSES – BOUMALNE DADES

After breakfast, depart toward the Dades Valley. The first stop is Skoura Oasis, a fertile expanse of palm groves sustained by traditional irrigation systems. Here, you may visit Kasbah Amridil, one of Morocco’s most beautifully preserved kasbahs and a striking example of pre-Saharan architecture.

Continue toward Kalaat M’Gouna, situated in the celebrated Valley of Roses. The region is famed for its Damask roses, cultivated for perfumes, essential oils, and artisanal cosmetics. During spring, the valley is scented with blossoms, and in early May the Rose Festival animates the town with music and local celebration.

By late afternoon, arrive in Boumalne Dades. Dinner and overnight in a hotel overlooking the valley’s dramatic rock formations.

DAY 3: BOUMALNE DADES – MSEMRIR – MOUNTAIN TREK TOWARD TAMTATOUCHT

Following breakfast, drive approximately 30 kilometers to the mountain village of Msemrir, where your trekking experience begins.

Accompanied by a local guide, you embark on a four-hour hike through rugged High Atlas terrain. You will carry only essential items in a small backpack; the remainder of your luggage will be transported to Tamtatoucht by vehicle.

The trek leads you to a Berber nomadic camp nestled within the mountains. Here, you will spend the night in a traditional tent or cave dwelling, sharing dinner with a local family. This rare experience offers direct insight into mountain nomadic life, agricultural practices, and seasonal migration patterns.

DAY 4: TREK TO TAMTATOUCHT VILLAGE

After breakfast, continue your hike for approximately four hours, descending gradually toward the village of Tamtatoucht.

Upon arrival, settle into a local guesthouse where you may enjoy a hot shower and well-earned rest. In the evening, a convivial gathering featuring traditional Berber music offers a warm cultural exchange.

DAY 5: TAMTATOUCHT – TODRA GORGE – RISSANI – MERZOUGA

After breakfast, journey toward the Todra Gorge, a striking canyon carved by the Todra River. Towering limestone cliffs rise vertically up to 300 meters, creating a spectacular natural corridor ideal for walking and photography.

Continue to Rissani, the historic heart of the Tafilalet region and former capital of the Sijilmassa kingdom. Here, you may sample Medfouna—often called “Berber pizza”—and explore the traditional souk, where livestock, dates, textiles, and spices are traded in an authentic setting.

By late afternoon, arrive at the majestic dunes of Erg Chebbi. Dinner and overnight in a hotel near the dunes.

DAY 6: ERG CHEBBI – KHAMLIA – DESERT CAMP

After breakfast, embark on a 4×4 excursion around the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Visit fossil-rich hills, former military outposts, and remote nomadic encampments. Observe traditional desert irrigation systems and learn about mineral extraction practices once common in the region.

In Khamlia village, enjoy a live Gnawa musical performance—a powerful cultural expression rooted in sub-Saharan spiritual traditions.

Later in the afternoon, begin your camel trek into the dunes. The approximately 90-minute ride brings you deep into the Sahara, where shifting sands glow in amber and gold hues at sunset.

Dinner is served beneath the stars at your desert camp. Traditional music around the fire completes this unforgettable evening.

DAY 7: ERG CHEBBI – AIT BEN HADDOU – OUARZAZATE

Wake early to witness sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, return by camel to the hotel for a refreshing shower before departing toward Ouarzazate.

En route, visit Ait Ben Haddou, the iconic UNESCO World Heritage ksar renowned for its earthen architecture and historical importance along caravan routes. Explore its winding alleys and elevated terraces offering panoramic views.

Return to Ouarzazate in the late afternoon. Optional relaxation in a traditional hammam may be arranged.

DAY 8: DEPARTURE – OUARZAZATE AIRPORT

After breakfast, transfer to Ouarzazate Airport according to your flight schedule.
